Today the theme set by Created by Hand is “Letters to Friends.” I created a postcard that I will be sending out:
I also just realized that this is my 99th post! I had already thought about having a give away for my 100th, so that means next post I will be sponsoring a give away. I will send out a package of hand painted backgrounds (8×10″ or smaller) to a randomly selected person who responds to that 100th post. So thanks for looking today and come back soon to see more details on the give away!
This week at CBH it’s a free challenge, and at Crazy Amigo it’s “Brand New Start.”
This page was initially done for 12/28/09 Mixed Media Monday challenge of “Your least favorite color”. I later decided it needed reworking….a brand new start, if you will. The original–here’s a thumbnail:
was from a photo years ago of an event I have mixed feelings about. I decided to alter the piece to be about an event I recall with true joy, my wedding. I first journaled about the old event on the left hand side–I wrote with permanent marker down the page, then horizontally, and then gessoed over it. The ghostly dancer is from a hand cut stencil I made. The actual color is a bit greener than it is here, but I am pleased with the outcome. Thanks for looking!
Today’s CBH challenge was “I’m Blue” and just in time for it to be true…Today I learned my latest submission for a juried show was rejected. I was honestly not surprised. The pieces I sent in were probably not a good choice for the particular show. I should have known it but I got this idea stuck in my head and listened to nothing else. Anyway…so I’m a bit blue. I posted this page from my journal recently, feeling I didn’t know where to go with it. Well today I used it to journal about my rejection:
This week’s CBH challenge is “texture”….my favorite! I had to make 2 and 2 very different explorations of texture:
The first one has watercolored paper towel and a strip of markered paper all stitched with wool. The second one has a paper towel underneath positive and negative punched paper forms with a wash of gesso over and dots of marker and colored pencil outlines. The clear plastic disk was stamped with an Inkadinkadoo image with Stazon ink. Liquid pearls (Ranger) under the disk and around the outside of it adhere it to the ATC.

Last night wanting to create but not knowing what, I relied on a tried and true “jump start.” I have a tin filled with cut out words and phrases from magazines. Often a poem of sorts happens, sometimes a word/phrase becomes the title for artwork. Last night, the poem thing happened. I had made some inchies before, also hoping they would spark off some ideas. In the end they all came together as a journal entry. By some synchronicity, Created by Hand’s challenge (“Tuesday CBH challenge on the blogroll) today was “nature”…so here is my entry:
"The Birds of sorrow found the universe open and gathered"
The bird stamp is from Ink A Dinka Do, butterflies and birds and there is an Ink A Dinka Do stamp from the gemstones and jewels set on the inchies.
