Mini book

So after seeing several mini book youtube videos I got a little hooked.  I’ve been playing with creating small books with used envelopes or cereal boxes and painting, stitching, covering, etc.  It’s fun.  There’s one small problem.  I don’t have any use for them.  I mean I don’t have any impulse to write in them or add photos.  They end up being empty albums.  I struggled with what to do…and then came up with an answer….RAK.  I’ve decided to leave them in public areas to be found by someone.  The cereal box one is harder to leave, but my first one is ready to go.  I’ve taken photos to keep a record of what I’ve done and what I’m sending out into the world.

Art Creations Friday

I’ve been really fortunate that I’ve had the past few Fridays to play along…Thanks for the fun!

Been trying to figure out how to add the original image and just can’t. It may be hard to identify the original in here…I just kept her face and her torso/dress to the knee…now she is a bathing beauty!

Athena-goddess of wisdom, war, and craftsmanship

This was an image of a girl on a bench with a bouquet  of flowers offered at Art Creations Friday challenge….

Blown up several time and a few changes here and there and she is transformed into Athena goddess of wisdom and craftsmanship.  I had no plans to create her, but as I colored and altered that is who emerged.

Created By Hand & Crazy Amigo

This week at CBH it’s a free challenge, and at Crazy Amigo it’s “Brand New Start.”

This page was initially done for 12/28/09 Mixed Media Monday challenge of “Your least favorite color”.  I later decided it needed reworking….a brand new start, if you will.  The original–here’s a thumbnail:

was from a photo years ago of an event I have mixed feelings about.  I decided to alter the piece to be about an event I recall with true joy, my wedding.  I first journaled about the old event on the left hand side–I wrote with permanent marker down the page, then horizontally, and then gessoed over it.  The ghostly dancer is from a hand cut stencil I made.  The actual color is a bit greener than it is here, but I am pleased with the outcome.  Thanks for looking!

Mixed Media Challenge

Today’s challenge at Mixed Media Monday is “Your least favorite color.”  It was hard to chose a color I didn’t like until I realized I was focusing on major color grouping where I can always find a shade/tone that I do like.  I don’t mind pink, many times it is just the color that is needed, but don’t  use it as a main color, and I especially don’t like to work with pinks in sweet candy-like ways.  I like a grungy-er look.  So, I made the effort to do sweet pink.

The background was one I’d already done in a journal made with scraped acrylic paint, stamps, large bubble wrap prints, etc.  I used an old photo of myself wearing a tuxedo and changed it into a skirt.  I added a penguin as it was the theme of the party I was originally dressed for.  Can’t say I love it anymore…As I titled it…”I still hate pink”!

Things I’ve been working on

So during my hiatus I have been doing some small bits of artwork here and there. I have an altered catalog I’ve had in the works for months and did some work on it…

Here is one page I’m quite satisfied with…I was playing with extending forms that were already on the page and suddenly this figure appeared.  She makes me think of a marionette, though while she looks like a puppet she also looks like she is puppeteering.  Who’s in control here? Always a good question, and rarely has a real answer.

Another piece I’m still trying to make something of is the shrine I started way back for my dog Mimsey.  Here are 2 recent shots:

Things obviously got darker on the second go-round.  I am so stuck on how to add in what is missing…nothing seems to fit right.  I feel like I want things, 3-d, but nothing seems to be right.  I know not to push too hard and am just letting it rest right now.  Of course, it’s always great to hear other’s views!

No Art

I’ve been struggling with getting to my artwork…no that’s not fully accurate. I’ve begun several larger projects and I did take some photos to track the progression.  I just find myself putting off posting anything about the projects and images…now I’ve even lost track of where I saved some of the images.  I’m not sure if the resistance is about the projects themselves…several have had to take a back seat to pressing obligations, some I just haven’t had the time to work on.  OR, is it just about sharing things in their less-than-finished state.  Showing my messy process, artwork in it’s unfinished state that may never be finished, or may change radically.  Ultimately, I suppose I am talking about judgement.  How will I be judged? Yet that was what this blog was to be about, charting my progress, process, and opening up to feedback.

So what are the projects?  The most pressing one is my niece’s tallis (prayer shawl) for her bat mitzvah in October.  This is what has pushed several others off.  I began to weave one, and quickly realized my loom and my skills were not up to snuff!  Then, one of Mimsey’s last acts of destruction was to break the loom itself! So, plan b was to paint/dye silk and create.  Also something I’ve never done before…I do that a lot, decide to make something, then figure out how to.  I am moving along in that pretty well, and am pleased with the separate pieces, but need to dive into putting it together, and FAST!  On the back burner is a small altar in Mimsey’s memory…I actually have images of progress:

It’s far from finished, but here it is.  The other “on the back burner” is a larger painting I began, and stopped.

I realize I need to honor my process–here as I develop my blog, and in my artwork.  I may have real things pressing, I may be avoiding (love those challenges!), and that’s what it is for now.  Too many words today.  So it goes.
